Mounthoolie – Residential Extension and Alteration

Mounthoolie is a beautifully reimagined island cottage on Eday, transformed from a near-derelict structure into a warm and welcoming home. Once on the brink of collapse, the original building was a modest one-bedroom dwelling, later extended with flat-roof additions that had long since fallen into disrepair.

Working closely with our client, we carefully restored the integrity of the original cottage and designed a new adjoining wing that now houses two comfortable bedrooms and a spacious bathroom. A linking entrance hall and utility space unite old and new, creating a simple, functional layout that respects the scale of the original home.

This modest yet meaningful project reflects a growing commitment to revitalising abandoned buildings on Eday - not only preserving the island’s character but also supporting future tourism and economic sustainability through sensitive redevelopment.
