Fernybrae – New Build Family Home

Fernybrae is a landmark family home nestled in the secluded cove of Millbay on Eday, one of Orkney’s most unspoiled islands. Set against a backdrop of sweeping coastal views, this is one of the largest and most ambitious homes we have ever designed - crafted as a series of distinct wings, each with a unique character and purpose.

Inspired by the scattered forms of traditional crofting cottages and the original three derelict wings of the former building, the house is arranged to create a sense of intimate scale within its expansive footprint. The front wing, facing the bay, forms the heart of the home with a vaulted open-plan kitchen, living and dining space that opens onto terraces at both the front and rear.

The central 1¾-storey wing houses five generous en suite bedrooms, each positioned to make the most of natural light and island views. To the rear, a long, narrow wing discreetly accommodates utility spaces, a three-bay garage, boot rooms, plant room and a private garden entrance.

At its far end, the Pool Hall extends outward to frame breathtaking sea views across Millbay and towards Sanday, with direct access to a sheltered south-facing terrace complete with hot tub and outdoor seating - a luxurious retreat in this peaceful island setting.
